Should You Remove The SIM In Your Car?
We now know that the data collection in modern cars is out of control -- The question is, how does that data even leave your car? And what, if anything, can you do to stop it?
That's what we cover in this video, Part 3 of our car privacy series: SIM cards, WiFi, and OBD ports.
We also talk about how companies trick us into handing over our data, things that we can do to push back against this insane overreach that we’ve somehow normalized, and the giant legal loophole for cars that makes it super easy for law enforcement to collect your data without a warrant.

There currently are no easy fixes to the problem of car surveillance. Car manufacturers currently only see the opportunities that come from selling your data. Let’s make sure they also see the opportunity of offering privacy as a feature, by making our voice heard!

It is sad that companies treat your personal data as an asset. A company should treat it's customers data as a liability. There should be huge lawsuits when there is a leak to make personal data holding a liability.

This has been discussed several times with regard to cars in the USA but it is not clear to me how this applies to the legal framework in Europe. Do they sell cars with different data harvesting items switched on or off in different countries, or do they collect it everywhere but throw it away in some countries, or do they simply feel that things like GDPR has no impact on data collected by cars in Europe?

let me put it to you this way, you don't need peoples permission to "pass on" information to emergency services, it should be common knowledge and expected without informed consent, you can't dial 911 and then say to the operator "I don't wish for this call to be recorded", the most polite response would be "not an option" "I don't want to be identified" pfft, why call for help? "my location is none of your business" XD Emergency dispatcher... it's in their job description, when I call emergency I give up all forms of privacy for a valid reason. BUT... between you and the manufacturer, there is no real reason to give out your personal information other than for the services that you are paying them for, these days cars need to not only be harder to steal but act like toxic sludge for anyone other than those authorised to be using it, you don't want to be stealing cars - it's not only wrong but these days it's like a homing beacon. Yes, these value added services can make things easier like OnStar, the kick backs from those services would keep the company afloat for years to come, however they shouldn't chop the car into bits unless you pay for those "premium services" I like my radio, I like the ability to use apps with my car.

Thankfully, in my 2016 Subaru, the engineers had the foresight to connect the car via the 3G network. Once the 3G networks were obsolete and turned off, it just sits there trying to connect forever, which has the fantastic side effect of draining the battery. When I go to the airport, I always have a 10mm wrench in the glovebox to disconnect the battery with. I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket one, but it still uses Android Auto. Hmmm.... Our legislators in The States are useless with anything technological, so hopefully the Europeans will come up with some serious laws against this kind of crime. With AI, your data is the source code, so the big tech overlords are as greedy as ever for your data.

The Patriot Act was passed just a month after the attacks of 9/11/2001. There's NO WAY anyone could have written it in that time, it was already in their hands waiting for just such and event to occur so they could shove it down our throats. That's why, despite many warnings, the attacks of 9/11 went off without any hinderance from the GOP. Know your enemies!

Was going to sell my 2003 Chevy truck for a much newer vehicle, but now having second thoughts.

Best and most useful tool? Buy an older car that isn’t a rolling violation of the 4th amendment. Avoid apps that track your location, and especially those used by auto insurance companies. Even after all that, your phone can listen to you, and log your speed and g forces, but at least you’ve eliminated most of the culprits

And when the nag-ware notices when you start the car doesn't deter consumers from removing the SIM, the designers will put up more blocks to disabling it, such as adding a non-removable (backup) eSIM. And when people figure out how to block those too, the designers will prevent the car from starting in the first place. This will NEVER stop until there is equivalent to legislation to credit data reporting laws. There will be many lobbyists using false equivalency and straw man arguments that collecting this data saves lives. But this kind of privacy protection MUST be passed. Yes, laws like that will absolutely destroy the current firehose data market. I'm fine with that.

Need to hear downsides of decentralized status quo. For Sia I read a setup page a year ago with a doctorate level explanation on how Sia has gotten worse over time. All providers remunerate in crypto first, then fiat; all corporations with decentralized offerings still hold some degree of control over the nodes. And from me personally, the consumer prices seem higher than for standard storage. A combo, self stored + any remote storage, works better. Hopefully a well rounded solution will appear.

They build one fully equipped model giving them economies of scale and then the consumer can chose if they want to turn it on or not. Please, stop saying data.
